Orbital welding solutions

Orbital welding takes its name from the Latin "orbita" (orbit). In essence it is a method of joining two parts by fusion at high temperature. It makes it possible to clamp two pipes of the same size in line and weld their circumference automatically. In conventional welding the welder moves the arc or heat source around the joint by hand; in orbital welding the machine rotates the arc a full 360° around the joint automatically to produce a smooth, even weld. Because the process is automatic, operator error is kept to a minimum and the weld pool is under full control, which gives clean, high-quality welds that meet safety standards.

Orbital welding delivers reliable welds of repeatable quality across a wide range of techniques. It maintains a high standard even with unusual materials, with thick-walled or small-diameter pipe and in difficult working environments.

Makfen carries out orbital welding on pipe sizes from DN15 to DN100 and documents the quality of its welds with a technical report and borescope inspection.

Makfen's orbital welding solutions support your projects with equipment that complies with the standards. The equipment can be described under three headings: the power source, the power source control unit and the weld head.

  • Power source: the unit that sets the welding power according to the parameters stored in the system or the weld to be made.
  • Power source control unit: the unit that controls the speed of the weld head motor, the arc current and the shielding gas.
  • Weld head: an enclosed system that keeps the weld from being affected by changes in the surrounding air while welding is in progress.

Orbital welding lets Makfen weld even at points that are hard to reach, giving you smooth, high-quality and safe welds on every kind of pipework. For that reason it remains the method of choice in many sectors and applications: food, chemicals, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, biotechnology, fisheries, hydraulic lines, CIP lines, purified water lines, deionised water lines, process lines, and the pipework of plants and vessels.
