Polyester resin plant
The word polyester combines "poly", meaning "many", with "ester", the chemical term for a group of organic compounds. A polyester can therefore be described as a polymer containing many ester groups, that is, a chain of ester units.

With more than 25 years of experience in the sector, Makfen carries out the complete turnkey installation of polyester resin production plants and also offers innovative solutions in the process engineering of the project. Polyester resin is used mainly in structural engineering applications and in the production of glass-fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) profiles.
Polyester resins are used with reinforcement as polymer composites that resist corrosion (the unwanted change that metals in particular undergo through electrochemical reaction). The most widely used type is unsaturated polyester resin. Polyesters are synthetic copolymers with a very wide range of applications, and they come in several types.
These are:
- Orthophthalic polyester
- Isophthalic polyester
- Terephthalic polyester
These pale, slightly greenish resins give products better mechanical and physical properties. Pigments are added to obtain the required colour, and fillers are also used in polyester resin applications. Polyester resins can cure at normal room temperature (in polymer chemistry, curing is the hardening of a polymer material through cross-linking of its chains, brought about by electron beams, heat or chemical additives).
Applications
Polyester resin is a synthetic material produced by the reaction between an organic acid and an alcohol. It is available in liquid, gel and film form. Because it is light and weather-resistant, it is chosen by architects, builders, engineers and designers.
Polyester resins are used in fibres, plastics, composites and coatings, but above all in composite materials, with notable applications in aerospace, transport and construction. A material with such important uses deserves a plant built to the same standard. These plants have to be designed with precision and care, and Makfen, which has a thorough command of the process and of how the system behaves, engineers them complete with system piping, internal installation, assembly, automation and many other services.
