Thin-film evaporator manufacturing

A thin-film evaporator is a system in which solvent is removed from high-viscosity, heat-sensitive liquids by heat transfer across a thin liquid film that is spread mechanically over the heated wall. Put more simply, it is industrial equipment that separates components purely by heat transfer, with the heating medium never coming into direct contact with the product. These systems demand detailed and precise work, and their most important characteristic is that they can separate substances that are very difficult to separate from one another.

Features

Used in many industrial systems, a thin-film evaporator basically consists of a shell with a heating jacket and a rotating assembly known as the rotor. The vertical design is the most widely preferred. The short contact time with the heated surface and the high velocity of the liquid are very effective when heat-sensitive substances have to be separated.

How it works

In a vertical evaporator the feed enters at the top, tangentially to the shell and the heated surface, and the rotor then carries it down the inside of the shell. The movement of the rotor blades creates bow waves, and these waves produce highly turbulent flow. This flow gives the best possible heat flux, and the thin liquid film travels down the inner wall in a spiral path. As a result, separation in a thin-film evaporator takes place extremely quickly.
